Learn-to-Play
Caledonia Youth Lacrosse Club offers an energetic and welcoming Learn-to-Play program for young athletes who are brand new to the sport. Our focus is on teaching core fundamentals, building confidence, and fostering a love for lacrosse in a fun, low-pressure environment. We strive to create an age-appropriate experience that helps players develop skills, coordination, and excitement for the game.
Ages
PreK - 2nd Grade
Girls and boys in Pre-K through 2nd grade are welcome to join Learn-to-Play. Since our team play starts in Kindergarten for boys and 2nd grade for girls, we typically recommend at least one session of Learn-to-Play before joining a team—more may be required.
When
April - June
Our Learn-to-Play is currently held once per year from mid-April through the end of May/beginning of June based on the Cal Schools district calendar. Additional Learn-to-Play sessions, at other times throughout the year, are currently under consideration.
Where
All practices are held at Duncan Lake Middle School on DL5—the practice field on the South side of the tennis courts.
Practices
Practices are typically held once per week and usually last for one hour. Practices and practice length may vary based on session.
Games
At this age-level, we are focused on learning the fundamentals of lacrosse, so no games are scheduled. However, gameplay-style drills are used in practice to teach the kids the pace and to help them gather more knowledge about the sport.
Jerseys
No jerseys required; athletic clothing is recommended for all practice sessions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who can register for Caledonia Youth Lacrosse Learn-to-Play?
Our Learn-to-Play program is open to brand-new players in grades K–2 who live in or around the Caledonia community. No experience is required—this program is specifically designed for beginners.
What equipment is required?
Learn-to-Play is intentionally low-commitment. Players only need a lacrosse stick to participate. We occasionally run full-pad intro sessions later in the spring, but standard Learn-to-Play practices focus on stick skills, footwork, and fun games.
Do you offer loaner or rental equipment?
Yes. We have a limited number of loaner sticks available for brand-new families on a first-come basis. This helps kids try the sport without needing to invest in equipment up front.
Can I coach if I know nothing about lacrosse?
Absolutely! Learn-to-Play is one of the best places to start coaching since the environment is fun, simple, and focused on fundamentals. Our boys director—who currently runs this program—will help you get up to speed with drills, rules, and practice templates.
Who are the coaches?
Our Learn-to-Play sessions are led by our boys director, parent volunteers, and supported by upper-level CYLC coaches and older players when available. Every coach follows USA Lacrosse best practices and undergoes a background check.
Does my child need a USA Lacrosse membership?
No. We do not currently require a USA Lacrosse membership for Learn-to-Play.
My kid has never played before and is nervous—will the program be too advanced?
Not at all. Learn-to-Play is intentionally designed for kids who have never touched a lacrosse stick before. We teach everything step-by-step, and players advance at their own pace.
How can parents get involved?
We always welcome parent helpers on the field—whether assisting with drills, managing cones, or supporting small groups. No lacrosse knowledge required!
Payment options available?
Season payments can be made in full or through a payment plan. And as always, we never want cost to prevent a child from trying lacrosse. Please reach out to info@caledoniayouthlacrosse.com if your family is experiencing financial hardship.
